The Rising

As per the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the inception of mobile game is considered with the popular game named Snake introduced in the early 1990s. While, portable games were kept on hold due to the expensive graphic calculators and the lack of sound technology and its experts. Even when the technology got a little improved, games only remained to portables systems like Nintendo Gameboy or the PlayStation Portable. The major change came in the 2000s when both technology and its entertainment potential got some leverage for game development purposes.

Overleap of Technology

The late 1990s witnessed huge advancements in cell phone technology, better mobile devices that can actually have the capability to handle games. The early phones such as Blackberry and PDAs were actually traded as business tools rather than a platform for fun. It put a break on their potential for game programmers. Initially, Apple introduced it in 2007 through his iPhone with an alluring compromise of easy to use tool for everyone. Apple highlighted this entertainment value as well as its capacity as a cell phone. Therefore, the technology was redefined in larger terms, and iPhone simply took the market by storm.

This initial leap laid a strong foundation for the next generation phones as the technology was constantly growing and new possibilities for game development cropped up. A study, held in US, revealed that in 2013 there were 200 million active phone users including iOS and Android devices, but PS3s got only 70 million. With this expansion, mobile games got the desired platform to reign in the market for long. The ease of carrying games in a mobile, liberty to access it anywhere and easy handling attracted many who were not traditional gamers but became potential audiences.

One of the other reasons, why mobile games got more popularity is the reduction in the packaging games in CDs for physical distribution saving a huge amount of money. The downloading of games came into vogue through cellular or Wi-Fi networks. The introduction of Apple App Store was claimed to a huge ground for developers who identified its potential quickly.

Cost and Funding

Behind the rapid success of mobile games, their cost plays a huge role. They are not only easier to dispense than those conventional ones but also are cost-effective in terms of development. The reason is quite obvious as mobile games do not have the room for descriptive cinematic graphics; other tactics are used to allure the audiences. A few general practices to attract them were fun back stories and innovative mechanics. To handle such features, it is easier to code them than detailed graphics, hence, less man power is required to develop this and it ultimately saves cost.

Stagnation in Conventional Games

Very low development cost and available funding have helped that the mobile arena stays fluid, and will keep on changing as per the audience’s demands. This seems to be an advantage as more conventional games show difficulty in adapting. The new gaming platforms (smartphones) have now started the longest video game consoles like PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.

Conclusion

Well, the entire story revolves around the change in the taste of gamers and the mobility; ease of functioning and convenient access enable them to stick with the screen of a smartphone involved in playing their favorite game. On the other hand, some can argue the merit of the experience that the gamers get on a proper console and environment that they get while playing.
