In fact, the ideal business has business leaders who understand IT and IT leaders who understand business.


Foster Understanding
It is vital for business leaders to become tech savvy. They must understand the tools that IT is putting into play in the business and how they can be of benefit to the entire organization and ultimately the bottom line. When the powers that be are onboard with new technology and are seen using it and promoting it, there is less likely to be resistance from other areas of the company.


IT needs to understand the overarching goals of the company. When they completely understand where the company is headed and what it is trying to achieve, IT will be much more likely to implement technology that can ultimately help people throughout the company do their job to the very best of their abilities.


Encourage Open Mindedness
Encourage business leaders to see IT as more than the geek squad. IT’s role must be much more than just maintaining Internet connections and troubleshooting. They must be seen as an integral part of the entire team working towards the same goal, rather than just supporting those doing the real work. Look to IT for solutions.
IT needs to view business leaders as more than just non-tech savvy bosses. When IT takes the time to figure out who knows technology and who doesn’t , they can be much more efficient when it comes to approaching the right person about innovative solutions. They can also be much more effective in filling in the gaps where technology education is lacking.

Promote Forward Thinking For Stronger Market Position

Business leaders who challenge their IT department to find newer and better solutions for every aspect of the business on a continual basis have a much better chance of staying at the forefront of their industry. IT should be charged with knowing what the competition is doing from a tech standpoint. What is working for them? What is not working? This kind of intelligence is needed from all levels of a company with each department working to its strengths.
When business leaders stop regarding IT as a pricey support team that must be tolerated and IT stops seeing leaders as stuffed shirts that must be coerced into even the smallest technology improvement, things start to improve. Since they are working from the top, it is the role of business leaders to initiate these changes. Include IT in brainstorming, business strategy sessions and other company meetings, and change will be forthcoming and fast. Work together, so you really are working smarter for the good of the business.
