The Internet is filled with cats and memes.
Welcome to the Internet - Dissecting Memes - Image 1

If you've been around the Internet for a very long time, I'm pretty sure you have already seen a couple of memes here and there. In the early months of 2011, people began to wonder about the cartoon comic strips depicting awkwardly drawn characters and an erroneous dialogue. While most people believe that it is garbage, there are a few who became interested in what is known as memes.

To be exact, Internet memes did not start in 2011; in the early 90's, memes were used via email or Usenet community forums only. If you're not familiar with Usenet, it's the very first community forum to appear in the online world. Memes were also used in messageboards and newsgroups; it allowed users to share simple yet important information to one another.

For those who have no idea what a meme is, it is basically a picture, a video, an idea or a style of action that is spread from one person to another. Take for example, a friend tells you a funny story through a live chat box and you give a "LOL" or "Laugh Out Loud" reply. LOL is a particular type of meme that counts as an acronym. Memes are very important since it makes the Internet a lot more interesting.

And when I say a lot more interesting, I meant this interesting:

Some of the best memes in the Internet go all the way up from "Y U No Guy" up until the latest Royal Baby pictures. (I meant no disrespect, but those are indeed funny!) Some of the best memes have managed to make people laugh, cry and even celebrate while some memes are meant to condone events that should never be mentioned or repeated again. Memes have also made certain people famous, like Blake "Scumbag Steve"Boston, Kyle of "Bad Luck Brian" and Laina "The Overly Attached Girlfriend"Morris. In one particular tweet in Twitter, Laina said that she's always amused with the Overly Attached Girlfriend memes and she still can't believe that it's her face on the meme itself.

With Internet memes, one can actually become more popular than a Hollywood actor or actress. Take Grumpy Cat, for example! Grumpy Cat has already starred in a branded cat food commercial and is set to have her very own movie. What started as a simple picture of a cute little kitty with a frown became a nationwide sensation!

While most people think that Internet memes are fun to read and look at, there's a minority of people who believe that memes are a waste of time. Well I don't. For some, reading memes can give people some sort of stress reliever while working. I read and look at memes and I feel somehow relieved, especially when things don't go my way at work. There are also some stories where people met and became good friends; others became lovers and got married along the way because most memes are the stories of our everyday lives. In the end, an Internet meme is the same as an area code directory; you meet people based on the memes that you like. People who love "Bad Luck Brian" tend to meet and talk and chat with each other as is with the others.

All in all, the Internet memes are here to stay. And if you are having a bad day, remember the Trollface. You'll be laughing in no time at all.
