Life, as grandpa would say it, was so much simpler during the good ole days. It’s true that there will always be a certain charm that comes along with simplicity and living with only the basics. Nevertheless, it’s also true that there have been many things that we used to be unable of achieving before but we can now do today because of technology. For seniors who refuse to adopt it, here are factors that might change their minds.

Entertainment
While in the bus, at the mall, or while waiting for your doctor’s appointment in a clinic, a great way to kill boredom is to take out an ever reliable mobile gadget. Technology has always been a great provider of entertainment. From movies to music to games to books, one can always find the right device to get them entertained. Even seniors need a little recreation and modern technology will not fail them on this one. There are many free phone application that provide games that are basic enough to amuse the player or challenging enough to keep the memory sharp. For more physical activity, there are game consoles like Wii and Xbox which offer recreation in the form of exercise or sports.
Health
One of the things that need to be given more attention is one’s health. It’s often inevitable that with age comes deteriorating health condition. Let’s not delve into the sophistication of science, technology, and modern medicine in curing illnesses and fighting diseases. Let’s think about the everyday contribution of technology to the lives of the elderly. There are devices, for instances, that help in monitoring the status of blood pressure and sugar level. There is also of course the digital pill reminder. It’s designed to keep seniors from forgetting prescriptions or getting the dosage scrambled. Basically, it sounds an alarm whenever it’s time to take the next dose. There are a lot of options for this in the market like the MD.2 and the Rescue Alert.
Safety
Compared to younger adults, seniors could be more susceptible to crimes and accidents. It is important therefore to ensure the safety and security of seniors. Luckily, there are many ways that technology can help protect seniors as they do their daily routine. For instance, tracking and navigation come very handy through GPS. Aside from working a compass and identifying streets and locating establishments, it also serves as an aid for rescue teams, police and firefighters in responding to memory-loss related emergencies of seniors. Similar to this is an emergency response system device. It can be worn as a necklace or bracelet and can connect to a 24-hour call center with a push of a button in times of emergency. An activity as simple as taking a bath can even be worry-free with devices like the temperature-activated flow reducer. This low-tech gadget is designed to turn off the water when it gets too hot, preventing burns.
Connectivity
Constant communication is important to stay connected with loved ones, to socialize and to avoid feeling lonely. Well this is definitely something you can’t worry about with the help of technology. From video conferencing to chatting to calling, it’s good to know that staying connected is so much easier for anyone regardless of age. The quickest way to contact a loved one, a doctor, or an emergency aid is through a cellphone. There are many cellphones today that boast of senior friendly features. For instance, the Samsung Jitterbug is known for its tie up with Great Call, a service provider that serves as a personal operator for its senior users. There is also the Doro 410 which has larger than normal keys and the Snapfon Ez One which features an SOS button that can automatically connect with an emergency phone number.
