A Brand Domain Name For Start-up: Why Is It Important?

As a business startup, it is always important to ensure that you get the right domain name for your business. A domain name is your business’ identity and it must be able to set you apart from the rest of the players on the market. It must also be easy to remember and endear people towards your products and/or services. While the above considerations have been in existence for quite some time, they no longer constitute the entirety of considerations that must be made when naming your business. Nowadays, there is also a need to use domain names effectively in branding efforts. This is an exercise that demands more than simply inserting a brand name in your domain name. It now requires a deliberate selection and structuring of the domain with a strong emphasis on the long term competitive strategy and brand architecture. In this article, we are going to look at the need for a brand able domain name for your startup.

Dissenting School Of Thought

It has been argued by some professionals that a start-up does not need to worry so much about a branded domain name. These professionals propose a situation whereby you can start with a good name and a temporary domain. The understanding is that you can always secure a good domain at a later stage. This strategy is not advisable as it has the potential of costing you more than what you anticipated. Premium dot.com domain owners can easily research on your company and ask fro a hefty price for your requirement.

Choosing Your Domain Name

It is not important to tie the name of your business to the services you provide or the products that you sell. For all its worth, Amazon is the name of a river but the world has grown to love it and know it as an ideal place to buy books. Google spelt wrongly but that has not stopped it from being perhaps the most widely used and known name across the world. Its correct spelling is googal, which is in reference to the number of items the founders of the company were hoping to index. Although these scenarios might seem to suggest that the choice of a name is of less importance. That understanding is far from the truth as it has taken most of these companies huge budgets to drive their branding and PR campaigns. If you do not have such a luxury then the domain name that you choose for your startup really matters. It has taken considerable budgets to drive brands such as Bing, twitter and yahoo to the top. Coming up with an equally catchy and creative name is not difficult but without a generous budget you won’t achieve the same results.

With a limited budget, the spreading of your domain name is restricted to word of mouth. This requires your domain to be easy to pronounce, catchy and meaningful. This fact is also buttressed by findings in recent research hat have pointed to the fact that websites whose URLs tell what they do get more clicks that those with some random names no matter how creative.

The need for branding considerations in the selection of a brand name is actually getting more and more prominent by the day. If you can’t brand your new business then google and other major search engines will thrust you into a cesspool of similar establishments.
