The costs of running an IT department can easily get out of control. There are dangers in terms of costs and lost productivity in delaying or in running too fast to changing platforms and technologies. To help prevent missteps, here are five ways you can improve your IT management strategies.

1. Keep Pace with New Developments in IT.

In the mid-1990s, information technology departments depended on large servers and the development of larger capacity and faster wiring. Now, this technology has been replaced by faster and more complex networks arrayed across the globe.

Some companies were caught flat-footed in the change, becoming IT dinosaurs. As a result, their businesses suffered great financial losses. Others rode the crest of the tech wave, becoming more nimble and powerful as a result. IT managers need to be aware of industry changes, educate corporate managers and make certain their organization is on the right side of future changes.

2. Know User Needs

When planning new projects, it is important to carefully interview proposed end users. IT projects designed on the basis of assumptions or on previous projects can easily fail. Projects must be designed and tested to be as user-friendly as possible for them to be successfully used across an entire company.

3. Update Consistently

By stinting on IT investment, some parts of the organization may operate with greater cost than others. An even greater problem for the business will be that not all parts of the company can electronically communicate with others. To maximize organizational operations, all key aspects of a company must be technologically compatible.

Mistakes often occur when management wants to retain and keep using outdated hardware just because it still operates at an acceptable level. It is important that the IT manager be able to demonstrate to decision-makers how this older technology may increase costs and decrease efficiencies.

4. Optimize Centralized and Decentralized Operations

IT Operations like networks, databases, disaster recovery and daily security operations should be directly overseen by managers within the company. Other IT operations, like customer service and Dell third party support, can be outsourced to other providers. Examine your operations to see which ones you should apply direct focus to and which would fare better under the direction of an outside source.

5. Identify Responsibilities and Roles.

When designing IT projects, they must be thoroughly managed with great specificity. Each piece of the project must be planned as far as what it entails, how it fits in with the whole project and who is responsible for each segment.
