5 Critical Things to Follow While Building Links in 2013

Man a lot happened in the SEO world in 2012! Huge updates, the 'imminent doom of SEO' (well that happens every year) and the rise of social media. Without a doubt this year is going to be crazy too, but let's start with what we know for sure. Here are the 5 SEO rules to stick to in 2013:
1. Co-citation
The writing is on the wall. The power of anchor text as a ranking signal is going to be shared with something new. What's it you ask? Well that is what's known as 'co-citation'. This is where Google is now doing a little bit of thinking for itself. If I have a website called www.zeezoo.com which sells 3D printers, I can now get ranked for the keywords '3d printers', 'printers 3d' and '3d printer' even if those keywords don't appear anywhere on my site, nobody links to my site with those keywords in the anchor text and even if they don't link to me at all. How does Google do it? It's simple. If thousands of sites around the web are mentioning my site zeezoo.com in their articles along with keywords like '3d printers', then Google will assume that this is what my site is all about. Smart!
2. Localization

Thanks to the recent Venice update, broad, country-wide search queries are now being localized to provide a more local and relevant list of results. Let's say you live in Las Vegas and are searching for 'wedding cakes'. Google will only show you results for wedding cake companies in the Las Vegas area, since itâs unlikely you'd be willing to drive to the next state to buy one. You might need a physical address to play the Google Places game, but not so with localized search results. Add a local landing page to your site, optimize it and watch the local traffic pour in.
3. Link Diversity

Forget about getting 200 links all pointing to your home page with the anchor text 'michigan insurance'. That game is well and truly over! No site naturally gets hundreds of links all with the same anchor text, pointing to the same page and in a relatively short period of time. So make sure to create a diverse link profile by getting links to all your pages, that the anchor text spans many different keywords and from all types of different sites as well.
4. Valuable Content

Content marketing was one of the biggest SEO buzzwords of 2012 and for good reason. Finally people are waking up to the fact that building links and filling one's site with thin, useless content doesn't help anyone. Google made two huge moves last year with their Penguin and Panda updates to rid the web of these kinds of sites. The big SEO agencies took notice when their clients started complaining about poor results and so they were forced to sell a new visionâ¦

Content marketing.

The idea behind this is to create content that people actually want to link to. Content that makes people think, helps them with their problems and is cutting-edge. Anything else and you're likely just wasting your time.
5. Social Media Integration

It's no secret that Google is now using signals from social media sites like Facebook,Twitter, Google Plus etc to judge how much people care about you. Those big brands with millions of followers that are rabidly retweeting and posting about on Facebook are clearly loved and Google knows this. So it's no surprise that they keep rewarding them with high rankings. By contrast, Joe the plumber in Milwaukee only has 13 fans on Facebook and 78 followers on Twitter. Do you think he deserves Google's love? I don't think so.

So there you have it! It's just not the same game in 2013 so make sure you stick to all 5 of these concepts this year. It will definitely pay off.
