Flurry, a mobile analytics, advertising, and monetization company examined the shifting trend in mobile bases at the end of 2014. The company derived data from the more than 140,000 mobile apps running all over the world. Ultimately, Flurry found the US as the lead addressable market, followed by nations like China, Japan, India, Germany, Brazil, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and Russia.

To begin, Flurry examined apps in its user base over a 30-day period. The snapshot allowed the company to look at the current market and rank Android and iOS running apps on users’ devices. Further, the examination allowed for an assessment of smartphone penetration in the European and US markets. At the end of 2011, the United States was in the lead, with 109 million out of the total 264 million apps and was at the top of a list of 20 countries.

Following behind the US was China, with as many as 35 million users running apps. The United Kingdom fell into third place with 17 million; South Korea landed fourth with 16 million, and Japan, France, and Germany tied for fifth at 10 million users running apps. Thus, the analytics reveal the US market comprises 41% of the entire addressable market.

Then, in an effort to assess market potential, Flurry relied on IMF population counts with adjustments based on a Miller-McCune study examine middle class sizes in different countries. The mobile analytics company made upper class size estimates as well, and in doing so, ensured that countries like Brazil, India, and China, all of which have large populations, were in their estimations. Nevertheless, both India and China made it into the top 20 addressable markets. China has at least 122 million smartphone users that can afford to purchase an Android or iOS operated device, and with this fact, the country beat out the US, which has 91 million users with smartphones. India has 75 million smartphone users. Japan has 65 million users and Brazil has as many as 34 million.

Flurry also wanted to find out, regardless of mobile penetration, which addressable market in the world was the largest out of all markets. First, the data-analyzing firm looked at market maturity. Ultimately, the company determined the US, with 200 million, offers the biggest addressable market. As much as 66% of Sweden’s addressable consumers were using Android or iOS devices: that’s 3.2 million out of 5 million users, and thus, the country was also marked as having the most mature market. France rated tenth in terms of market maturity with 28% of consumers using smartphone devices.

Flurry’s addressable market assessment proved revealing and lends insight into global smartphone penetration. While China and India are close in terms of population numbers, in regard to addressable markets, India is falling behind China. Flurry asserts the world’s fourth largest addressable market is Japan: a country that has mild Android and iOS penetration when compared to the size of its addressable market.
