If you're trying to get people to notice your business today, then you need to incorporate SMS into your marketing strategy. After all, you advertise where the people are, and everyone's glued to their phone or other mobile device.

Okay, so now that we have that out of the way, it still begs the question of what SMS tactics will give you the best returns and conversions. Let's take a look at some ideas that will be sure to get people interested. But first ...
SMS: A Brief Description
For the sake of those who aren't up on what SMS is, we pause for a quick definition. SMS stands for Short Message Service. It's a permission-based messaging platform that lets users receive texts of up to 140 characters, though the gross character count is 160, with the first 20 of the 160 characters set aside for the sender's name. Twitter is the most popular SMS.

The article "Why Text Messaging Will Endure The Test Of Time" makes a compelling case for the idea that SMS is here to stay. Smart businesses will jump on the bandwagon and ride it to success.

Everyone caught up? Okay, on with the wisdom ...
Hold A Contest
Everyone likes the excitement of entering a contest and having the prospect of winning something cool. When using SMS, you can either have a contest where the recipient must reply with a code in order to be in the running to win a prize, or have a contest for who can sign up the most friends to receive your SMS promotions.
Conduct Promotions
Every so often, I receive an SMS from my favorite Irish bar, giving me the details on their latest promotion. It's a great way for a business to keep in touch with their loyal customers and make sure the latter are kept aware of things like Happy Hours, holiday-themed parties, or trivia contests.
Ask Questions
Send an SMS with a link to a survey, couching it as a desire on your part to improve your business' service, product, premises, whatever. People enjoy the chance to express their opinions. As an added sweetener, throw in an incentive such as a coupon code or other reward for participants.
Promote Your Social Media
SMS and social media work hand in hand, and nothing illustrates this better than having a text message with an embedded link to your social media page or website. After all, there are some ideas and concepts that can't be shrunk down to 140 characters! Use SMS as a means of alerting people to your website, particularly if you've recently updated certain pages.
Keep It Short
It's amazing that there are actually businesses out there that can manage to cram boredom and tedium into a 140 character message. Keep your SMS short, sweet, and snappy. Make your point clear and direct, and be certain that it sparks people's interest.
Incorporate A Call To Action
We've kind of implied this point already, but it bears coming right out and saying it. Your SMS message needs to have a means for the user to react and respond to it. Something like "Happy hour 4-6, reply 2245 for discounted apps!", for instance, gives the customer everything they need: an event, the time, and a means for them to respond and thus gain a perk in the process.
