Recovery Storage group feature which was very popular with earlier versions of Exchange Server is known as recovery database in Exchange Server 2010 and its later versions. The main concept behind creation of RSG in Exchange server 2013 is almost same. Here, the system administrators can mount the database and then extract the data from the database which has been mounted. Let us understand the process of RSG in details.

Creation of Recovery Storage Group

A recovery database is considered as an exceptional database of the Exchange server mailbox where system administrators can mount a database that has been restored from the backup. It is not visible to users. So, it means that if you have a mailbox database named as MDC01 then there would be a normal mailbox database MDC01 which would be present in its aboriginal location and another MDC01 would be on recovery process. To create a Recovery Storage group, one has to follow the steps given below.

1. Creation of Recovery Database

For this, one has to use the Exchange Management shell command which is given below

The above cmdlet creates a recovery database RDB2 on the Mailbox server MDC01

Verifying the creation of Recovery database

After the creation of the Recovery Storage Group, you can verify whether the recovery database has been actually created or not. This can be done by executing the following Shell command on EMC.

2. Restoring Database via Recovery Database

* Now copy the recovered database and its corresponding log files to the location where you are going to recover the database.

* With the help of the ESEUTIL utility bring the database to clean shutdown state.

The above example clarifies that a recovery database and log file path of E:\Databases\RDB1 which has a log generation prefix of E02.

* Now give the recovery database a special name but remember that for EdbFilepath specification, use the name and path of the database file and for the LogFolderPath specification, use the location of the retrieved log files.

Here, it clarifies that you are creating a RD which will recover DB1.edb and its associated log files present at the location E:\databases\RDB1.

Mounting Recovery Database

To mount the recovery database, execute the given power shell command.

To restore the recovered database to the production mailbox, follow the commands given below.
