What Will Search Bring in the Future?

Even though you might not realize it, searching is a part of your everyday life already. This is true in your personal life, and it is likely true in your professional life as well. Consider how many times you take to the web to find something each day. Whether you are on Google, searching the contents of a website, or looking to see what's on Netflix, you are searching. When you are accessing a database at work to find a file or an email, you are searching. Chances are you are doing this dozens of times each day, and perhaps more.

The Current State of Search

We have certain expectations of the search engines we use as well. They should work quickly, and they should be accurate. Google knows and understands this, which is why they are constantly making changes and tweaks to the way their system works. They want to provide the user with the results they need as fast as possible. Even when people use vague phrases and misspelled words, they simply expect the search function to work for them. In many cases, it does, and the search functions are improving all the time.

However, there is a huge difference in terms of web searches and enterprise searches. The web has robust and powerful search engines because they are backed by billions of dollars that can go into the continual development of those engines. They can provide an amazing set of results, but they tend to go wider rather than deep. Enterprise search works a bit differently. It is capable of locating various types of datasets - structured and unstructured - all from within an organization.

While it seems as though this type of search should be easier and simpler, that's not always the case, unless a quality enterprise solution has been implemented. In addition, these systems will benefit from having someone that can manage them, create the taxonomies, and ensure it is working properly. When it does work, it can provide you with more options when it comes to searching. The results tend to go quite a bit deeper with enterprise search. It can handle both words and phrases, as the web search system does. However, it can connect certain documents and items from within the organization with greater efficiency.

Many developers creating enterprise search have been working with open source software. One of the benefits of this type of software was the fact that it didn't contain any licensing fees. In addition, it was easy to build onto and easy to embed. Developers have relied on this for internal use within companies, as well as for commercial purposes. These were workable for a time, but everyone wants search to be better and simpler, and the demand for improved products is higher than ever.

The Need for Better Products

Think about the term big data. All of the data that companies are collecting each day is growing at an unbelievable rate. We already generate quintillions of bits of data a day, and this number is set to increase. Data is coming at us from all sides. The web, mobile devices, the cloud, items that people wear, vehicles, and so much more. Finding what you want instantly is more important than ever.

Other factors that are increasing the need for new and better search products are the cloud and analytics. In fact, analytics are extremely important, and they need to be implemented into enterprise search technology. It allows the user to do more than just find the data they need. It will allow them to understand the data and how it affects the company. A good example of this is marketing. With analytics, it becomes possible to understand how and where the last marketing campaign went right and where it failed. This allows the team to take the data and rework their next campaign to make it even more successful.

What Will the Future Bring?

Fortunately, many companies are working diligently to create new and improved enterprise search products that are capable of doing things that are truly amazing and unlike anything happening today.

Many believe that the next five years or so will see a marked shift in this type of search. Think about how people are using certain technologies today, such as their assistants on the phone like Siri and Cortana. While these tools are still in their infancy, they make it easy to search and find an amazing amount of information and data quickly. In the future, they could do more than just provide information. They could actually provide advice that they've gathered from the data they've found. For example, they could advise someone on something as simple as cooking a new dish to helping someone make a business decision.

The cloud is helping with the advances in enterprise search, making it easier to provide a scalable solution that has as much power as the system needs. Search in the future will start to take into account a number of things about the user personally including age, location, profession, and the documents they create. They can help to provide information to you as you are searching; essentially reading your mind as to what type of information you will need next. They won't do all of your thinking for you, but it's getting closer and closer to something such as that becoming a reality.

Some experts believe that these systems will be so powerful that they can determine your tone when you are creating an email by "remembering" the tone of the last email you wrote to the person and their response. It has the potential to advise the user in a number of different situations. These are just a handful of the many ways that enterprise search will likely be changing and evolving in the future. The potential for tools like this is amazing. It's both scary and exciting to see how things are going to be unfolding in the coming years.
