The market for smart phone sales in India today is over 25 million. Every year this market is observing a rise of 50% in its sales. The stupendous variety of smart phones in the Indian market today is astounding. This has been made possible by the emergence of android OS and the mass production of handsets by global and local manufacturers. This huge influx of variety has helped the Indian market to develop a fancy for big screen smart phones.

The Indian consumer has motivated manufacturers to produce smart phones with bigger screen size. All major handset manufacturers have either already launched a big screen smart phone or they are in the process of doing so. The screen size of a smart phone is measured diagonally and currently the 5Inch Phones seem to have gained maximum popularity very quickly. According to the research held By the firm IDC smart phones with screen sizes from 5Inch to 7Inch rose 17 times from a last year. 5Inch screen smart phones contributed to only about 3% of the sales in 2012 but currently they make up close to 20% of the sale said a senior executive of a global handset maker.

The constant demand for big screen smart phones will lead the smart phones into the tablet category soon. In fact the most popular tablet in the world, The I-pad mini is only an inch larger than many smart phones in the market. Strangely, the tablet users in India prefer to use their tabs under their own roofs and like to carry appropriately sized smart phones outside with them. The love for big screens is very genuine as it stems from the fact that bigger screens have better image quality and almost all applications perform better on big screens. The company Apple has been influenced by the big screen frenzy and it is now looking into building a new I-Phone that is more than 5Inch in screen size.

While it is understandable why the market is shifting towards bigger screens it seems to defeat the main purpose of a phone. Ever since the invention of cellular phones it has been the main aspiration of manufacturers to produce the sleekest, smallest phones as they serve the purpose of portability and also flaunt the miracles of technology at the same time. This is probably why it can be observed within the smart phone market of India that big screen size in premium category phones are not appreciated so much. This proves that there is still a section of the market that prefers phones that fit into their pockets.

This craze for big screen smart phones has created a new fashion trend in clothing too. The head of global design for Dockers (a Levi Strauss brand) Doug Conklyn told FoxNews.com recently We recently increased the size of our ‘coin pocket’, from 3x3 to 4x4 to accommodate today's larger phones.

This shift in trends has brought upon changes in the way we lead our daily lives. Bigger screen smart phones mean more space, better performance, quality imagery, vibrant colors and better adjustment to complex applications such as ‘Angry birds’ and ‘Temple run’.

Conclusion:

Today's smart phones market is being flooded with big capacitive touch screens in the range of 5Inch to 6.9Inch. The Indian market has embraced this influx of big screen technology to the point that it has brought upon changes in the field of fashion and consumer preference. As phones become larger in size portable devices seem to loose their essence. Only time will tell whether this trend is here to stay.

To sum it all up:

The expansion of smart phones market in India has led to a big population of consumers who prefer 5Inch plus screen smart phones. This is an indication towards the lack of fondness towards portability as it no more remains the single most important factor in deciding the statistics of a phone.
