Nano computing to be Predominant in the Coming Years

Personal computers as we know today were once called mini computers. Mini, because they were vastly small in size compared with the mainframe computers of those days, though this terminology is no more in use. Since then, computers have diminished in size, but they continue to become more powerful. In keeping with this trend, people nowadays talk about Nano Computers and Nano Computing. In its strictest sense, Nano Computers should be no more than a few nanometers. In reality however, a Nano Computer is more synonymous with miniaturization, and often the two terms are used interchangeably.

That Nano Computing will take the center stage in computing is little in doubt. Researchers all over the world are working on these lines. Among the countries funding Nano Technology researches are US, Japan and European Union. Nano Technologies hold potential to create millions of jobs, and save tons of material. But, Nano Technologies are also receiving flak from environmentalists, because of the belief that they pollute the earth. Some protagonists against Nano Technologies even consider it unethical and against human values.

But, indications are that the computers of the future will be predominantly Nano Technology based. Nano Technology is not new to humans, they have been around for ages, and they were even used in the manufacture of swords, history reveals. Under present day scenario, however, Nano Technology and Nano computing will have a new meaning. They will find applications in every imaginable sector as drugs, cancer treatment, defense, computers, material sciences, space exploration, oil prospecting, automobiles, and fuel and so on.

Nano Computing in Computer Miniaturization

Nano Technologies will find vast application in computers. If we are to go by reports, Nano Technology scientists are working on atom level manipulation for making chips. At this microscopic level, electrical conductors and logic level chips will be built atom by atom. Most conductors will be no more than a couple of atoms wide. If things work out as intended, then you should expect storage devices to grow smaller and smaller and higher and higher in capacities.

There are at least four types of Nano Computers which will see the light of the day. They include electronic Nano Computers, Mechanical Nano Computers, chemical and bio-chemical Nano Computers and Quantum Nano computers. Chemical Nano Computers will find use in manipulating atom level reactions and help make calculations that are not possible as of now. Mechanical Nano Computers on the other hand will be used in building robots and tiny components that can be embedded. Quantum Nano Computers will be primarily used in single-atom level for storage devices.

Nano Computing in Medical Sciences

The most notable innovations in Nano Technologies and computing are going to be in medical application. They will be used for identifying and destroying pathogens when injected in to blood streams. At least one University is known to be working on a Nano Technology based computer spray that when sprayed on the human body will help doctors analyze a patient's heart condition remotely. Scientists working on this project hope to come with a computer for this purpose in under 4 years, and believe they will be no larger than a cell.

Another application for Nano Computing is in DNA research and the buzz word is Nano Informatics. When they become a reality, scientists will be able to take a closer look at the structure of DNA that forms the basis of life and regeneration. It will lead to new drug formulations, and newer ways to contain diseases, and even prevent some of them happening.

Another great application for Nano Computing will be in creating Artificial Intelligence. Nano Computing, it is expected will help build computers that can think and act like humans, and even take decisions, a task that was thought to be impossible even a few years ago. The day is not far off when Nano Computers, the real molecular level ones will be embedded in human bodies and interconnected with other devices.
