Information Assurance

Information assurance (IA, InfAs) is the practice of managing information-related risks. More specifically, IA practitioners seek to protect and defend information and information systems by ensuring confidentiality, integrity, authentication, availability, and non-repudiation. These goals are relevant whether the information are in storage, processing, or transit, and whether threatened by malice or accident. With all of the threats that are now common in the IT world, such as viruses, worms, phishing attacks, social engineering, identity theft and more, a focus on protection against these threats is required. It uses physical, technical and administrative controls to accomplish these tasks. While focused predominantly on information in digital form, the full range of IA encompasses not only digital but also analog or physical form. In other words, IA is the process of ensuring that authorized users have access to authorized information at the authorized time.
