Why Gaming Industry is Not Taking Google Console Seriously

The present time is that of gaming and this trend has been picked by the industry giants as well. While Sony and Microsoft have always remained in the gaming sphere with their respective Playstations and Xboxes, it is now the turn of some new players to enter this domain. The newer entrants to the sphere of gaming are Google and Apple. While Apple has announced its support for dedicated game controllers for all its i-devices, Google is developing a new game console, which is rumored to run on the Android operating system. This new trend shows that the technology giants are now eyeing the gaming industry.

However, as of now, both Sony and Microsoft, the two stalwarts of the gaming industry are not taking the Google console seriously. There are several reasons for this and they are confident of coming up with something that would push the Google Console into the corner before it actually becomes a threat to their dedicated gaming consoles, namely the Xbox and the Playstation. However, smaller operators like Gamepop, Gamestick and Ouya need to worry a bit as the Google console promises to wipe out these small vendors.
Google, as of now would approach gaming from its core area of its expertise, that of mobile gaming. These are small titles and when compared with dedicated console games, occupy a different sphere without any need to impinge on the other side. Both sides have their loyalists and as of now, they can both survive.
However, this technology is set to change quickly as the devices are becoming increasingly strong in being able to stream large amounts of information from servers. In addition, the games are getting better and more mature. Sure there is place for all types of games as there are different people with different gaming habits, yet when the controllers would be common with devices, it would be difficult to rely on the dedicated game boxes to provide entertainment, as the devices would be able to stream the games to a television.

While the gaming industry might not be taking the Google console seriously now, it is to be understood that the typical console-based games have a smaller customer base as compared to the android based games. If the customers are able to get solid gaming experience from a device and a game that is not as expensive as the Playstation or the Xbox, they would surely forego the investment and opt for the Google console. It is only a matter of time before the fancy games are released on the non-traditional consoles because the architecture of PS4 and Xbox One is such that developers would find it cheaper to develop games for other consoles, such as Google console.

In addition to this, the cloud technology, which has started showing its potential, would be used to stream full versions of fancy games like Call of Duty, which were once the property of the consoles only, to the mobile devices. If this really happens, one can imagine the fate of the dedicated consoles rolled out by Sony and Microsoft.

While most of the concepts discussed above seem to be theoretical as of now, there is a distinct possibility that they may really take shape. However, the gaming industry is gearing up to take the challenge and is recognizing the fact that the gaming landscape is changing and that they need to do more to stay in the lead. While there is no immediate threat to their domain, there is the possibility of it being shaken. However, only time can tell whether these concepts would really work out as thought or would they remain active in theory only.
