What Is Data Centre Colocation - What Is It For?

This has become a big thing in the IT community the past few years and has become very good for businesses alike as it saves them millions, literally! Colocation, or colo for short, means that all of the hardware such a the routers, cables, firewalls, servers and software etc, belongs to the client or business and they simply rent server space to put their hardware.

How Do You Mean They Rent The Space?

Well it’s simple, say you were to buy a rackmount server and routers, hubs along with cables to hook it up. There are data centres out there willing to house your hardware and get it connected into their massive T1-T3 internet lines! If you are a large scale business there are some places that will rent you the entire warehouse for your entire networking and IT infrastructure.

What Are The Bonuses?

These are pretty simple and straightforward! One great bonus and one of the biggest is the security, these warehouses contain around the clock CCTV, inside and out. Another great bonus is the fact that your servers are able to reach T1-T3 speeds using the powerful Internet lines.

You can cancel out the fact of fire damage happening too as these warehouses are also fitted with state of the art fire protection systems! If a fire was to happen, nothing would shut down at all, a part of the warehouse where the fire is will be sealed off to people and the sprinklers and foam will kick in until the fire is extinguished.

The Price

Prices can vary massively depending on your needs, If you are a small retail company you would need what’s called a cage. The cage is big enough for around 10-15 servers and would be perfect for running a website and checkout system on the Internet. If you are a private business owner with 5-10 staff you would be better off with the cabinet or a shared area, the cabinets are key coded so only you can access them and the shared areas are also key coded so you and the other business can gain access.

As for the price I am really not sure because many different companies will vary on this, it honestly does depend upon your needs and the needs of your company. Using colocation though will and does save companies thousands upon thousands, no more storing your own servers in the office building, no need to keep them cool with air conditioning, no worries!

Tim Pat Dufficy is the owner of Server Space Limited, he wanted to share this article with you to clear up any points you had on the Colocation, as there are still many companies out there that do not know about it. Tim Pat Dufficy owns a data centre and also offers Colocation, so if you are a business or personal consumer, please visit us and we can help you out, whatever your needs!
