Cars are an undeniable part of people’s daily routines or their daily lives. Cars are what they use to get from point A to point B. It is what brings them to work, to school, and anywhere else they want to be and although there are other modes of transportation, cars remain to be the number one vehicle people use. Over the years, cars have seen so many changes, from the classic sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, four-wheel drives to energy efficient cars such as the Toyota Prius. We have seen so many changes over time that it has become difficult to imagine what else could be done to the regular car people use on a daily basis. Who would have thought that there could be more?

In Awe of Self-Driving Technologies

Drive a car without even holding the steering wheel. Manage the road curves with unadulterated accuracy. These are the things that self-driving technologies are trying to accomplish. Audi was among the first companies to introduce such innovation and the world was in awe of what their car had to offer. The German car company first launched its self-driving car called Batmobile at the International Consumer Electronics Show in January of this year. It sported a piloted driving system for automated parking and works just by using a smartphone. Yes, a smartphone. Smartphones are already awesome because they support games, make VoIP service calls possible, and can do just about anything but who knew smartphones could be even cooler by their newfound ability to control a high-powered car? The power of technology and what it can produce is truly unfathomable. The self-driving technology and remote controlling of a car is obviously a development that might capture the interest of millions of car enthusiasts all over the globe and it is no wonder that another car giant took the plunge and embraced the innovation as well, and it is no other than Mercedes Benz.

The Latest Mercedes Benz S-Class

The Stuttgart-based car company launched its virtual chauffeur technology with its new US$100,000 S-Class in Hamburg. The launching event, held on May 13, was also graced by singer Alicia Keys. The self-driving car was a picture of class, technology and utter elegance. Dieter Zetsche, chief executive of Mercedes Benz’s parent company Daimler-AG said in an interview that the virtual chauffeur will mark the birth of autonomous driving. The latest Mercedes Benz S-Class has the ability to park itself, brake automatically when needed and notify the person at the steering wheel when he or she already feels tired. Yes, it has the ability to detect exhaustion probably even better than a regular person. During the launch, Mercedes also said that future S-Class units will also enable the car to automatically change lanes at autobahn speeds. Some skeptics may find this future feature dangerous but there is actually no reason to worry for safety is what the new S-Class and all the other future S-class units are concentrating on. Everyday driving won’t also be as exhausting as before with the new S-Class and its virtual driver.

The Future of Self-Driving Technologies

Aside from the maneuvering features, the S-Class also boasts of an optional system that is similar to the autopilots, the kind of technology that airliners use to perform an array of tasks while up in the air. In cars, this feature will help the driver manage different car systems all at once. Mercedes Benz plans to include virtual chauffeurs to its other units which include hybrids and diesels. The New York Times also reported that several United States dealers plan to support the project and will put the S550 Sedan as top priorities, along with the all-wheel drive versions and AMG performance model.
