Samsung Galaxy Fame: Product Review - Image 1

Most mobile users nowadays are dreaming of owning cutting edge smartphones with topnotch specs and cool features. But if you’re one of those who want to own an Android smartphone but are on a belt tightening situation, don’t fret over. You might be interested in checking out one of the recently released smartphones from Samsung. The Samsung Galaxy Fame is one of the new members of the Galaxy family. It is actually an entry-level smartphone powered by 1 GHz processor and runs the latest Android Jelly Bean operating system. At a wallet-friendly price, you’ll get 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, 5-megapixel camera, average display, and a lot of user-friendly features and apps.

Design and Display

The Galaxy Fame flaunts a simple yet classy design featuring a white polycarbonate chassis and a silver finish on its sides. Measuring 113.2 mm x 61.6 mm x 11.6 mm, this unit is pretty cute in size and at a weight of 120.6 g; it’s indeed very portable and pocket-friendly. And with its ergonomic design and curved body, this handset is really a delight to hold and grip. Though it is made of plastic, it does manage to give you a solid feel in the hand because of its sturdy construction.

The phone has a minimalist look as well featuring only a single button for home on the front. The top is the home of the standard 3.5mm audio jack, while the bottom houses the micro USB port. To the left is the volume rocker while to the right is the power button. The 3.5-inch touch screen display is just right for the size, but the 320 by 480 pixel resolution is a bit disappointing. The lack of sharpness is noticeable, as well as its poor viewing angles. On the plus side, color reproduction is very good, so you’ll get pretty vibrant and vivid images.

Camera

At a very cost effective price tag, you’ll get a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, which is quite reasonable enough for an entry-level Android phone. Photos captured by this standard snapper are also good, with rich details, sufficient color contrast, and enough sharpness. Also, an LED flash is present, so taking photos at night isn’t a problem. Those who love video calling will surely love this unit as it also comes with a front facing camera, though it can only take VGA photos.

The only downside is that it takes a while to start up, just like any other low-end smartphones. At pretty low resolution of 640x 480 pixels, you would expect a mediocre video quality, especially if played on a much bigger screen.

Performance and Connectivity

Found under the hood is the 1 GHz processor, so don’t expect a super-fast performance as delays are occasionally present, especially if you’re running a lot of apps simultaneously. This isn’t really ideal for those users of other third party services from providers such as the RingCentral as it may cause some technical issues, especially when it comes to call quality. Connectivity options on the other hand include GPRS, GPS, Bluetooth-® v 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and USB 2.0.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Fame is a decent smartphone ideal for budget-conscious consumers. With its acceptable specs, good performance, user-friendly features, and excellent battery performance, it is indeed a must have if you want a simple Android phone that can meet your daily basic mobile needs.
