Do all technologies have an expiration date?

With changing times, technology keeps on changing. There are different pros and cons to different technologies and as a developer; you have to stay ahead of times in terms of research so that you can create better solutions. This is why you have to stay updated with the latest trends and techniques to create the most useful and interesting technologies for the users.

It was in the year 2001 that ASP.Net Webforms was formally introduced as a part of the .Net development environment by Microsoft. It ruled the web development environment as a part of the information technology industry until 2010. The idea of conceptualizing it was to compete with the ‘Classic ASP’. It was supposed to help in making web development easier. Since 2010 however, the introduction of open source community has had a negative impact on the same.

Younger generations of developers have started concentrating on newer forms of web development, while they never learnt the classic ASP.Net forms which in reality isn’t that entire novel. There was a point in time when ‘Classic ASP’ was the best form of professional web development. Java Development standards, which are more widespread these days, are nowhere near the efficient properties of the ‘Classic ASP’. Definitely, there are a couple of disadvantages of the ‘Classic ASP’, which were used for effectively replacing it by ASP.Net web forms. However, the ease of use and efficiency it provided in its dominant phase was unmatched.

Classic ASP was a judicious mix of a number of technologies that are prevalent these days, cutting out the frills and decoration; retaining their core values. It has helped developers in creating such mixed code HTML scripts, where both dynamic and mark up scripts could be well implemented. For people looking for code-only modules, this option was as feasible as a mixed code option. In this code base form, mark up script and HTML were merely made as constants to requests.

CSS, JavaScript, HTML and VBScript

For the developers who have never used VBScript, it is a much more sophisticated form of the same application for all intents and purposes. If it were refined and opened up until the ECMA standards, Java Script would not have been able to compete with it.

There were object-oriented constructs used in VB scripts whereas JavaScript was still being criticized for being too difficult to use. Besides this, there was still better documentation done with the help of the Old Wrox Book, VBScript.

Surprisingly, Microsoft didn’t make it possible to have easy plug-in and installation for hosting VBScript apart from Internet Explorer. If that had been done, the language wouldn’t have required an international usability as there would be an avenue provided for it. Even though indirectly, Java as the language of the Java community also had a major contribution in establishing Java Script as a predominant web scripting language.

It is a lesser known fact that JavaScript was formed from the C language while Java is a completely original language. It was a common belief of many developers that JavaScript was a subset of Java, which even helped it in gaining a lot of credibility.

All in all, out of all the modern day language sand tools used for web development, it is probably HTML that has shaped up to be an all-inclusive, easy to use and understand format, which is commonly being used by developers all over the world.

More about Java and how it affects the Web

Because it was freely available, Java became a very widely used development environment, with a little help from the Open Source community. ‘Enhydra’ was one of the first few Java-based applications to be produced in this league. It was also revealed that it had a lot of potential in terms of implementation, development and usage.

ASP.Net web Forms was developed in order to be a more powerful and compatible version of the ‘Classic ASP’ which was simple and easy to use. As a result, it became a huge success and made its way in the general business environments. Java being extremely complex wasn’t a feasible option for establishing as a new benchmark project.

Final thoughts

Technology has seen major changes of lately and the trends are being affected majorly by the likes and dislikes of the developer’s community, the ease of usage as well as longevity of the language or the technology in question. Developers need to focus now on moving with the latest technological advancements and creating technology for the future. They should now focus on creating languages and programming environments that can be sustained for a long time to come. This futuristic approach will help one in creating sound developing environments, which can be depended upon for creating the best websites as well as mobile apps.
