Cities are becoming smarter every day. The Internet of everything, widespread adoption of personal mobile devices, innovative integration of technologies and data and cloud computing are just some of the megatrends driving economies and individual lives in the world today.
Technology has made possible new industries and immense opportunities. It has also presented fresh challenges in cybersecurity, data integrity and talents. Expertise in IT functionality alone is no longer enough. An entirely new calibre of software engineers is required to harness the latest technologies to deliver useful smart solutions and lead organisations and economies into the Digital Age.
The Master of Technology in Software Engineering (MTech SE) offered by the Institute of Systems Science at National University of Singapore (NUS-ISS) is the only Master’s programme in Singapore that focuses on software and innovation, with a strong emphasis on practical application of computing techniques and concurrent development of business and soft skills to enhance students’ leadership and problem solving capabilities.
MTech SE is a premier professional course that is producing capable digital leaders who are managing and delivering high quality projects, and skilled architects who are engineering effective software systems to support business operations and growth. The programme has, to date, successfully equipped some 1,500 alumni with essential knowledge and first-hand experience in the actual design, development and delivery of software solutions.
A unique and valuable learning experience provided by MTech SE is the various opportunities for students to put theories into practice. This includes internships where students will participate in actual software development with organisations, such as current sponsors, CrimsonLogic and IBM, in projects ranging from smart home solutions and healthcare apps to media streaming and online trading platforms.
MTech SE is a carefully structured master’s programme that equips IT professionals with practical skills, critical thinking and deep insights to succeed in the new Digital Economy.
Ang Hao Yang, MTech SE, current full-time student
Ang Hao Yang is part of a six-member team currently enhancing an app, SmartLife, as their final year internship project. SmartLife, a software developed by local IT firm Smart Gateway, aims to transform residents’ experience by bringing all the conveniences of modern living in a single app. The team’s enhancement will allow SmartLife to be integrated into the Smart City in a Box platform, a total solution Smart Gateway and Surbana Jurong are co-developing for modern urban planning and development.
NUS-ISS’ practice-based curriculum is developed in consultation with industries and delivered by a faculty with 20-year industry experience on average. The learning goes beyond technical skills as students are guided on business-relevant aspects of software engineering.
MTech SE offers aspiring smart city architects the learning opportunities and competency development to fully develop their potential and to leverage technologies that can shape the future of city life.
