Recent domain registrations by Disney have had the Star Wars gaming community absolutely buzzing lately. When a company like Disney opts to register domain names like StarWarsAttackSquadrons.com, AttackSquadrons.com, and StarWarsSquads.org, you know it’s unlikely to be a coincidence. In fact, Disney has recently registered at least 25 Star Wars-related domain names, including the following:
- starwarsattacksquadrons.org
- starwarsattacksquadrons.net
- starwarsattacksquadrons.us
- starwarssquad.org
- starwarssquad.net
All of these names were registered on July 26th, 2013, and are currently pointing to Disney’s nameservers. While none of the domains are active, and there has been no official word from Disney as yet, it is clear that the company is looking for a strong hold over variations of the phrase Star Wars Attack Squadrons. Going this far to protect intellectual property must mean something. It’s also worth noting that game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) has also held the domain names AttackSquadron.com and AttackSquadron.net in their arsenal for a number of years now.
These were moved to Disney’s DNS servers on August 16th, 2013, making things very interesting indeed. Considering that earlier this year an agreement was reached between Disney and EA to produce new Star Wars games, it’s not hard to put together a good guess as to what they have cooking in the Disney kitchen. Companies have adopted similar strategies in the past for big name releases, so it’s looking very likely that Attack Squadrons (or a variation thereof) will be a hotly anticipated game title in the very near future.
New Game, Old Name
So what kind of game can we expect? This is where expert and fanboy alike can start having fun, as it’s basically anyone’s guess. It’s not a straightforward question to answer, as the potential title can point to several different directions. Spinoffs or follow-ups to the popular X-Wing space combat simulator series would certainly be popular, or perhaps we can look forward to a sequel to the classic Rogue Squadron series? We already have Star Wars: Battlefront being developed by EA Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment (EA DICE) in Sweden and due for a release in 2015, so it’s likely that the company wants a bigger slice of the pie around the time that the new Star Wars movies are due to be released.
Of course, the registration of these domains does not absolutely guarantee a new Star Wars title bearing a similar name. Disney could just be playing it safe by registering domain names in order to secure potential future projects that may never actually happen. It is, after all, much cheaper to register new domain names (less than $15 each) than to buy them from domain brokers.
However, the thought of eventually playing Attack Squadrons is nevertheless a tantalizing proposition that will leave gamers excited. Disney and EA are certain to release a couple of big-name titles in the next few years, so it would not surprise us to see Attack Squadrons hit the shelves sometime in 2015.
