In 2016, VMware has given a clear indication that it is going to put the focus on Telco NFV, for a reason. Sticking to its words, VMware on 5th December 2016, announced that it is going to partner OPEN-O (Open Orchestrator) Project that is hosted and maintained by the Linux foundation. VMware’s prime motto behind joining the project is to aid in industry adoption of open standards-based orchestration for NFV. It is an initiative to bridge the gap between SDN and NFV. It establishes an open framework that orchestrates end-to-end composite services across the networks and delivers end-to-end services orchestration across Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), Software Defining Network (SDN) and legacy networks which are a part of an industry-wide effort to advance agile operations. OPEN-O effectively integrates open networking technologies, thereby enabling carriers to efficiently implement SDN and NFV through open source code development. However, NFV Implementation requires robust infrastructure. VMware is also now part of governing body of the OPEN-O so that it can now participate in committee meetings regarding innovations in open standards-based orchestration.

By joining OPEN-O, VMware skills stay ahead in providing support for telecommunication companies worldwide and accelerate their innovation with fewer expenses possible. It is extending its role as a major player in interpreting the adoption of NFV by Telcos and CSPs. All the Communication Service Providers (CSPs) and telco enterprises benefit from varied network services and applications that integrate network, cloud and IT infrastructures.

VMware joins OPEN-O

OPEN-O enables operators to enhance agility and velocity simultaneously to reduce overall costs. The overall project accelerates multi-vendor integration, service innovation and enhances agility across network operations. VMware is now about to work with leading network providers, including China Telecom, Hong Kong Telecom, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel Corp, Red Hat Inc. and more. Furthermore, there are over a billion mobile, residential and other business users who are receiving advancements in the experience through NFV vendors.

Benefits of the OPEN-O Project can be summarized into:

  • Wide option on capitalizing between NFV and SDN architectures

  • Enabling multi-domain, multi-location and end-to-end service composition

  • Upgrading the complete service lifecycle and enabling reuse through model-driven automation

  • Successfully delivers the abstraction needed for complex services.

Brief about OPEN-O

OPEN-O was founded early last year to guide the open source approach to orchestration conducted by networking agencies. It is working hard to improve service agility and speed up the ROI (Return on Investment) for operators deploying in NFV and SDN networks. VMware enhances the OPEN-O to meet the demand for complex services over SDN and NFV.

Conclusion

Nearly 400 CSPs and telco companies are looking for a converged platform which is more reliable, faster and less expensive for launching their innovative services. Through this platform, they are aiming for various services to enable customers with an ability to select among the varied paths available, of what suits better to meet the objectives of digital transformation. VMware is now confident about its position in heading the curve to provide support for its innovation-seeking companies.
