The Purpose Of Cloud Storage

In the simplest terms, cloud storage is the online space that a user utilizes to keep their data. While most users keep their vital information on physical devices such as USB Flash Drives or External Hard Disks, they can also store it remotely, in which case they would do so with cloud storage.

The cloud storage, or online storage or virtual drive, solutions are provided by companies that use cloud computing facilities to manage and organize the storage space.

How this works:-

The providers access remote servers via the internet (or the cloud) to store data for their clients. It is their duty to manage, operate, and maintain the storage space. This service offers several benefits, such as rapid deployment, disaster recovery, data backup and archiving, and more. Also, all this is available at a much lower cost than if one were to purchase all the physical devices necessary to hold the data.

More benefits include saving on bandwidth, since the user can just send a link to the file to all recipients instead of mailing the file to them.

Types of cloud storage:-

Just like there are several types of Cloud Hosting India solutions, there are some forms of cloud storage. They are:
1.Personal
2.Private
3.Public
4.Hybrid

Personal cloud storage is also called mobile cloud storage. This form is basically a sub-type of public cloud storage. Here a user’s information is stored in a cloud and they can access it from anywhere. The best example here is Apple icloud. This type also allows for data syncing and sharing across several devices.

In the Private cloud storage type, the provider and the organization work in tandem within the data center of that organization. The infrastructure required for storage is already present in the private data center of the organization and the storage provider manages it, keeping all the security and performance concerns of the user in mind.

In Public cloud storage, no such relationship exists. The organization and the storage service provider are completely separate. It is the duty of the provider to store the client’s data in a safe location and make it accessible to them anywhere and anytime.

The hybrid cloud storage type combines the goodness of public storage and private storage. It stores the critical data in a private data center while keeping other data in a public storage space for easy accessibility.

Good and not so good aspects:-

File accessibility is the biggest advantage of cloud storage. Also with the recent massive data losses in natural and manmade disasters, most organizations feel better with keeping their mission-intensive, critical data in the cloud for safety and security reasons.

The biggest disadvantage of cloud storage is bandwidth limitation. Some users may not have fast network connection or it may be unstable, which could hinder their access to their files.

It has a usability issue too in that if the user utilizes the drag and drop feature, the file may be permanently removed from the original folder to the storage space. So, one has to be quite careful about using the copy feature only if they want to retain their copy while adding a copy to storage.

Cloud storage helps companies save on their annual expenditure. It costs around 3 cents to store data internally. Also, there is no power requirement to store data and that too adds up to the savings. However, some providers have a specific storage allowance and organizations that store a huge amount of data may find their storage costs going up significantly once they have stored some gigabytes of data.

While most providers have robust safety and security provisions in place, some organizations are quite squeamish about privacy and safety concerns related to storing data remotely.
