Google has come up with a beta program for purchases on Google. This means the buy button will appear on participating merchants' product ads in Google search. In a layman’s language, merchants qualifying for the program will effectively have a call to action in the search engine result pages. Apparently, Google is launching the program very quietly. As of this writing, there's been no formal announcement. But the option now appears on the Merchant Center where the text appears Help shoppers easily purchase on Google, so you can grow conversions and drive new customers.

Two years before when the rumors came to light, many agreed that it represented a full-scale attempt for Google to impose as a serious competition to e-commerce platforms such as eBay, Amazon. However, the company just introduced the beta program. Once it has the bugs worked out, you can expect it to be available to countless e-commerce webmasters. As a result,

  • With more than 4 billion Google searches conducted each day, we see a tremendous amount of traffic giving the company at least 75% market share in the space.
  • A buy button could help Google compete with Amazon for e-commerce searches. It also offers a frictionless checkout directly on the platform.
  • This feature could also be the springboard that Google Wallet needs to increase usage and engagement. Because the feature's availability is limited to Google Wallet users, consumers may be incentivized to adopt the wallet in order to take advantage of the new feature.

Understand its working

Any Merchant who participates in the purchase on Google program has the option to display Buy on Google button on top of their product ads. It’s a great way to save customers a step when they want to make a purchase. Currently, the button only displays on Android devices and users with Google Wallet who click on the "Buy on Google" button can purchase the product directly from a Google-hosted landing page.

Now as there are plenty of qualifiers in the program. It’s restricted to mobile devices with Google’s operating system and looks like only customers with Google Wallet can take the shortcut to make a purchase.

This Calls For a War between Tech Giants
Amazon still being the most popular e-commerce site in the world, Google wants a piece of that market share. In fact, Amazon grossed $136 billion in sales last year. Which means, there’s a pretty thin margin. And Amazon doesn't have a whole lot of cash to compete with Google if it wants to keep investors happy. Google management is aware of that and senses blood in the water and that is the reason why it is launching an e-commerce program that’s designed to challenge although not necessarily eliminate.
Test the Google Buy Button
Google is adding a shopping cart. So, I would personally recommend selling a product online test this new feature, ASAP.
