Regularly take out a large chunk of Gmail mailbox data by backing up emails to a local drive. This will save a lot of space of Gmail server for sending and receiving emails in the future. 3. Following that, enter the Personal info & privacy settings. From there, go to Download or Transfer your Content >> Create Archive.
4. From the Download your Data page, select None under Select Data to Include. Thunderbird can import MBOX file containing only emails.
5. Next, scroll down to Gmail Mail icon and click on the grey ‘X’ next to it.
6. If limited emails are to be archived, click on All Mail next to the Gmail icon. Click on the button next to Select Labels.
7. After that, select the label name from the drop down box and click Next.
From the Customize Archive Format page, do not change the file type or any other setting. Just click on Create Archive.
Now, an email will be sent to your account with a link to a zip file containing the emails in a .mbox format. The time duration for that email to reach inbox will entirely be dependent upon the number of emails selected. 1
Alternate Method to Create Gmail Backup in MBOX
There is an easier way to perform Google Mail backup by using SysTools Gmail backup tool. It is a much simpler approach to taking an archive of all the emails that need to be moved to a Thunderbird profile. Once a database is created for all selected emails using the convention method, a .mbox file is created. 1. At first, download and install the Import-Export Tool from the Mozilla link.
