Thanks to various benefits it offers such as flexibility, self-service, scalability and affordability and the fact that you can pay as you go, cloud computing has gained an immense following over the years. There are several different terms used to refer to it such as cloud server hosting, the cloud, cloud hosting and more. Cloud computing itself is unlike traditional hosting in that it uses a network of servers instead of just one server to share or pool resources using virtualization technology. Basically, what this means is that a group of servers behave as one server so that you get whatever resources you need when you need them.

The internet is the method used by cloud computing to deliver data, software or computing resources that are shared. In addition, though, dedicated networks and intranets can also be used. However, the normal or usual way of accessing the cloud is the internet. The cloud provides resources such as servers, networks, platforms, storage, applications and much more. People, organizations, applications and users all use these resources.

Characteristics of Cloud Computing

There are five basic characteristics of cloud computing that help to set it apart from the conventional methods of hosting. These are broad network access, rapid elasticity, resource pooling, on-demand self-service and measured service.

Broad Network Access

You can avail of cloud computing services off any kind of network, be it the internet, a dedicated network or the intranet. Provided you have the right credentials, you can access cloud computing services from anywhere at any time using any workstation or device.

Rapid Elasticity

This is also counted as one of the basic advantages that cloud computing offers to its users. The flexibility of cloud computing makes it legendary in the market. The services provided by cloud computing can be scaled in or out according to demand. Basically, you can utilize the services when you need them and as many as you need.

On-Demand Self-Service

This characteristic means that you don’t need human interaction to deal with services such as applications, email, servers or networks. All you need to do is create an account with the service provider, create credentials for billing and security and determine what services you need.

Resource Pooling

Multiple customers get the same resources in terms of physical resources and yet each customer gets a separate environment. The resources are pooled from many different servers. In the event of one server going offline, another server in the physical network will provide you the resource.

Measured Service

The number of resources you use and how much you use them can also be measured by cloud computing services. This means that you only have to pay for what you use and nothing more.
