IT, of Information Technology, is as fast-moving as it is dynamic. The problem is that there aren’t enough skilled people to meet the demand. Skill shortages have been identified in main areas of the digital economy. What does this mean? It simply means that various IT careers are available for graduates who possess suitable qualifications and experience. Are you the type of person with an interest in computers? Do you have a tech degree? Are you already employed? If the answer is yes, then you should focus on managing your career right now. You don’t want to spend the next years of your life at the help desk, do you? Of course, you don’t. So, don’t waste the little time you have and get to work. These are the steps that you need to take to make it happen.
Stay Up To Date in Your Industry
Gone are the days when you had to do everything annually, including searching for news. At present, you have the possibility to set up email alerts and that notify you when interesting content is available. The IT industry is constantly changing, so what you know today will become obsolete in a matter of months. Staying up to date with the continually evolving environment is what you should do. Why? You may ask. Because you need to remain attuned to demands. Having current and accurate information about the trends that are affecting your industry is essential to keeping relevant. Just be honest. Do you know what the trends for digital transformation are? Chances are that you don’t. Make sure to pay attention to the news and, more importantly, update your skills. Google alerts can help you monitor the World Wide Web for interesting content.
Find a Mentor at Work

The biggest mistake that you can make is thinking that you don’t need a mentor. The fact is that everyone needs guidance, especially at the beginning of their tech career. An experienced and trusted advisor not only offers you guidance, but also professional support. Your collaboration can very well lead to work experience considering that mentors generally have a network of business professionals. The point is that if you want to succeed in your job or move ahead, you need to do your best to grab a mentor. You don’t have to actually ask someone to become your personal counselor. You can reach out on social media or grab a coffee from time to time. It’s a good idea to look outside the workplace as well. The thing that you need to keep in mind is that mentors can be found just about everywhere. Before starting your quest, figure out what you want and determine the role of the IT mentor.
Be a Better Communicator
If you have a high technical aptitude, as well as extensive experience in design and implementation, then you’re assigned to work on the technical side of IT. If you wish to get more responsibility along the way, then you should focus on improving your communication skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are mandatory for jobs like project manager or IT director. What you have to do, basically, is to explain technologies and applications in English that everybody can understand. It doesn’t matter if you use UK display boards to show off important information. If you’re unable to express yourself clearly and unambiguously, then it will be all for nothing. People with strong communication skills aren’t held responsible for training or documentation. However, they do get promotions.

Don’t Be Strictly Business

Staff members are assets to the organization. They have to be both efficient and drive to succeed. Are you an efficient person? If you spend less time completing your tasks, then you truly are. You’re as good as you’re efficient. Putting for the absolute amount of energy possible isn’t necessary, though. Your boss knows that you’re not a machine and they don’t expect you to give your all in the workplace. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is mandatory. If you’re exhausted, then you certainly won’t be productive. Leave work-related issues at work and make sure to turn down the computer. What is more, stop checking your email account so often. The messages will still be there tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. The healthier the work-life balance is, the more chances you have of advancing your IT career.
Do the Job That Nobody Else Wants
Maybe you enjoy project work but other people don’t. It’s not uncommon for employees to turn down projects. The question now is if you should be doing the same thing. In fact, you should be doing the exact opposite, in other words, doing the job that nobody else wants. Let’s say that the enterprise where you’re working is preparing for a trade show exhibition. Surprising or not, nobody wants to create the display boards. Volunteer to do it. It may look like you’re doing something that’s beneath you yet, in reality, you’re getting noticed. You’ll succeed in your undertaking and you can be sure that you won’t be looked over for a promotion. Companies need employees who are willing to put in an effort and do what they are told
Advance Your Education
You have a degree in computer science and computer engineering, which is the reason why you’re not thinking about continuing your education. Well, this indeed a pity because continuing your education can help you advance your IT career. Companies are always seeking new ways to cut back on costs, so you should better make sure to become an essential asset. It can be helpful to have a business analyst diploma. It’s equally helpful to get a master’s degree in data analytics and enterprise architecture or IT security management. The choice is up to you. What matters is that you advance your education. Your resume doesn’t need to be filled with all kinds of degrees and certifications but neither should it be blank. Research the market and see what need there is. Your aim is to meet the market needs and wants.
