To really make a name for yourself in website development, there are various skills and tools that you’ll need to acquire.

Here is a selection of tips that should hopefully answer many of the questions you have about becoming a successful website developer:
Watch Your Language
There is a lot of code writing involved in web development and you will need to learn several “languages”, including JavaScript, CSS, and HTML, to name but a few. You will also need to find your way around a FTP client.

Educate Yourself
There are a lot of web design courses available these days which will help you develop all of the essential skills you’ll need to get started. Much of the coding and graphical aspects of you can learn in this medium, making a website development course a must-have for beginners.

Graphic Design
Speaking of graphic design, this is a skill you must pay close attention to and ensure you develop early on. Although website development is often a separate discipline to graphic design, it is important to grasp the basics so that you know your way around programs such as Photoshop and you understand the legality surrounding the use of images that you source online.

The Right Tool for the Job
They say a good workman never blames his tools, but in the case of budding web developers, you’re going to rely on your tools more than you could imagine. The browsers Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome both have some fantastic plugins such as Web Developer and SQLite Manager that will greatly help you along the way. Notepad++ is the ideal choice for text editing if you are using Windows, and for Mac users, something like TextWrangler or TextMate would be an excellent choice.

Web Hosting
As the Internet has grown, so too has the number of web hosting providers, offering a range of packages catering for everyone from small-time bloggers to huge shopping websites with thousands of products on sale. The provider and the level of service you opt for will ultimately depend on what kind of project you are working on and if you need features like dedicate database management, enhanced security and so on.

Becoming a website developer can be an incredibly time-consuming task and it may take many years for you to develop your skills. However, by keeping these points in mind when you first set out, you will have a much clearer understanding of exactly what is involved.
