As Bob Dylan once said times they are a changing. The SEO world has changed massively over the last decade and now it is time to do away with some of the old practices and start with ones that work today; and won’t get your website penalised.

Let’s take a look at some of the things you must ensure you don’t do these days if you want a website that will survive and thrive. I spoke with John Hones from 8Digital a renowned SEO company based in Oxford.

Relying on Just links

Many people still think that they can drive website rankings purely by sending links to their website. Content is becoming increasingly important and you need to ensure that you craft meaningful, authoritative and well-written content. You have to write for the reader and not the search engines. This means using synonyms and understanding what people are actually looking for in your content.
Keyword Stuffing

There used to be a lot of articles written about using 7% keyword density and including the keyword in the first paragraph of content 3 times, and in the last paragraph. Such formulae no longer work and will get your site penalised. Stuffing your content with keywords is a sure sign in to the search engines that you are trying to manipulate the results to the detriment of the reader experience. Write naturally!

The anchor text is the link text used to link to your website. Nowadays it is important that you have a natural linking profile. That means having long tail anchor text, branded anchor text and natural anchor text, such as click here or more information and variants of the target keyword in short lots of diversification. Over optimised anchor text, focusing on exact keywords, is an invitation for the search engines to penalise your website for manipulative practices.

Volume and Quality

It used to be the case that you could drive thousands of links very fast by employing Indian outsourcers. They would do poor guest posts, blog comments, profile creation and directory submissions, and so on. Most of links were very low quality and from websites in unrelated niche in most cases.

These days this does not work. These days it is about driving quality links rather than quantity. Having a poor quality link profile, with lots of spamming links, will hold you back in the search engines rather than improving your rankings. You’re much better off focusing on some top quality links from sites that really are an authority
Poor Quality Volume Guest BloggingSEO techniques Your Website Should Stop Now - Image 5

A few months ago Matt Cutts, leader of the Google Spam team, did a video talking about how guest blogging can be a negative practice. He stopped short of saying that guest blogging was dead but said that it’s important to focus on quality guest post activities rather than volume. If you are still sending out hundreds of guest posts, and essentially buying links, now is the time to stop and to refocus on quality-focused guest post activities.

Find quality sites in your niche and contact them and asked to produce top content for them. It will be much more investment to get posts onto websites but the rewards will be infinitely greater.
