This position handles the clearance function for programming produced by HBO Films, Miniseries, Entertainment and Cinemax, and is generally responsible for analyzing television scripts to determine the availability of names, resses and other factual information. In ition, in consultation with the assigned lawyer, this position advises productions on film rights, copyrights and other legal requirements; reviews contracts and researches information; negotiates releases and prepares correspondence; and advises executives and production personnel on clearance and other related issues.
Review scripts and treatments to determine whether names, places, business, etc., are fictitious; confirm facts by checking information sources Review contracts and other legal documents when obtaining rights from third parties Prepare releases for use of third party film clips, sound tracks, books, titles, names and similar items Prepare and issue legal clearance memoranda and other correspondence Follow up on clearance reports to ensure that necessary changes have been made Advise lawyers of issues or facts that may result in claims against the company, including film rights, copyrights, use of names, and other items Liaison with producers, production staff and attorneys regarding changes made in scripts Visit sets when necessary to support the Art Department, Locations, and Wardrobe Review rough cuts to ensure necessary changes have been executed Perform other related duties as assigned REQUIREMENTS 6+ years experience in areas of production, legal, licensing, or script clearance, or other transferable skills Knowledge of basic entertainment law concepts required; knowledge of copyright, right of privacy, defamation and other laws sufficient to review scripts and determine whether same conform to U.S. laws, preferred Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to review scripts and draft comprehensive reports highlighting legal issues requiring attorney input Proficiency with Lexis/Nexis, Dialog, Saegis, US Copyright Office Search function, Copyright/Trademark/Patent Databases, and other data bases and search engines Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with executives, creative personnel and production at all levels on clearance issues, as well as with third party licensors and suppliers; professional demeanor Ability to operate with strict confidentiality Ability to multi-task; highly organized and detail-oriented Ability to work well under pressure and prioritize assignments; self-motivated Excellent follow-through; resourceful and creative; problem-solver; good humor Flexible; ability to work with unpredictable production schedule when necessary
