Description of job: The Multi-Modal Analytics and Architectures (M2A2) group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) conducts research, development, and deployment of multi-modal data processing technologies to address national and worldwide challenges. Our core research competencies are computer vision, data analytics, computational modeling, data visualization and architectures, image reconstruction, signal and image processing, electrical engineering, computer science, and mathematics. In general, M2A2's activities involve first-class interdisciplinary research with other research groups at ORNL, collaborations with private industry and academic partners across the nation, and mission-specific support for federal research sponsors. In order to broaden and strengthen M2A2 capabilities, the group seeks a software engineer. The M2A2 group is accepting applications for a Full time technical staff position from applicants proficient in the following technical areas: software development, high performance computing, software frameworks, image processing, and data analytics. The selected candidate is expected to work closely with other team members in an Agile development framework, which include use of version control and high-performance computing tools. Current projects are national security focused and deals with multi-modal data such as imagery, text, radar, and geospatial. The new staff member will enhance current tools for automated analysis and visualization of large spatio-temporal multi-modal datasets.
This appointment is a temporary assignment of 6 months with potential for extension.
Job Duties and Responsibilities: Work closely with research staff to develop high-performance scientific software for an operational environment. Develop software and algorithms for general multi-modal data collection and analysis. Stay current with the latest machine learning, video, signal, and image processing techniques. Participate in organizations related to motion imagery and imagery standards including MISB, NITF Technical Board, and relevant working groups.
Required Qualifications: BS in computer science, image processing, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or closely related field. 2+ years of work experience in related technical space. Experience with Agile development and CI processes. Experience with Linux and Windows development. Substantial programming skills in a language such as C/C++, Python, and CUDA/OpenACC.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Real Time processing, parallel processing, high-performance computing. Experience with tools such as Git, CMake, ninja-build, GCC, or Visual Studio. Experience with container tools such as Docker or Singularity. Experience with GIS software suites eg ArcGIS, ENVI, SOCET GXP, QGIS, Experience in working with data formats such as NITF, GeoTIFF, and libraries like GDAL, NITRO, OpenCV, FFmpeg, etc. Experience with databases including SQL, TileDB, or SciDB. Q or TS with SCI Clearance
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmental Investigation (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
