General Manager, AWS Application Networking

Location Seattle, United States
Posted 09-October-2020
Description
General Manager - AWS App Mesh Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers a broad set of global compute, storage, database, analytics, application, and deployment services that help organizations move faster, lower IT costs, and scale applications. These services are trusted by the largest enterprises and the hottest start-ups to power a wide variety of workloads including web and mobile applications, data processing and warehousing, storage, archive, and many others.

Amazon EC2 was launched 13 years ago and redefined how compute capacity was provisioned, metered, and billed for our customers. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) was launched a few years later, and redefined virtual networking. VPC allows customers provision a logically isolated section of the AWS Cloud and launch AWS resources inside this virtual network. Over the years we have added Application Load Balancing (ALB), Network Load Balancing (NLB), Transit Gateway, and many other networking innovations that provide ever more powerful networking capabilities for customer applications. As application architectures in the cloud continue to evolve customers have adopted a new pattern, service mesh, to orchestrate communication between the components of an application with end-to-end policy management and encryption, and deep visibility into distributed applications. AWS App Mesh is built on the open source Envoy project, and provides a fully managed, multi-tenant control plane to provide customers with a service mesh that spans container and other compute types.

As the General Manager of AWS App Mesh, you will be responsible for driving product, engineering, and operations for a service that has the potential to redefine application communication in the cloud at a a massive scale. We've only just scratched the surface of how we can help our customers manage large distributed applications at scale. This is a highly ambiguous space; only a handful of customers like Stitchfix and Autodesk have adopted service mesh at scale. We are investing in every layer of the stack as we seek to do for application networking what we did for layer 2 networking with VPC and layer 4 networking with NLB. You will have the opportunity to deliver innovative features that allow customers to achieve increased levels of control, deployment safety, visibility, and drive forward the state-of-the-art for modern distributed applications. You will develop partnerships with other teams across AWS. You will help influence the development of new networking and observability technologies not just within AWS, but also by working with the broader container community.

The Containers and Application Networking organization is proud to be a diverse and inclusive organization. As the technical leader of this operationally sound organization, your job is to inspire builders and recruit the best engineers and engineering leaders to build the services and technologies that will be the backbone of computation at AWS for the next decade and beyond. As the business owner you will be responsible for the P&L of the services you own, their top line growth, and ensure that we have a strong product roadmap.
