If you have a holiday looming on the horizon, you might be starting to think about what clothes you want to pack and all those little extras you need to get - miniature bottles of toiletries, sun screen and a magazine for the plane perhaps. However, as we rely so much on technology in everyday life, are there any travel technology gadgets that you should be popping in your case? Although a mobile phone charger would be handy and a Kindle would be nice for reading while you’re relaxing by the pool, there are a number of other gadgets that would be very useful while you are away. Here we look at five you might like to invest in for your holidays.
1) Digital luggage scale

Your case is packed with everything you need, but when you get to the airport and check in your luggage you are horrified to receive a hefty excess baggage charge. Sounds familiar? If so, a digital luggage scale is a useful gadget and can repay for itself several times over in a single trip by the money you save from avoiding baggage excess charges. It is small and light enough to be slipped into your case, so at the other end you can check your luggage again before you travel home, in case any of your holiday purchases have put your baggage over the weight limit.
2) Gorillapod

Photos of your holiday are a must, so you’ll already have thought about packing your camera. However, have you noticed when you get back from holiday, so often you aren’t in many pictures yourself? Whilst you’ve been so busy taking photos of your friends and family, you haven’t been able to get yourself in more than a handful - it gets tiresome asking other people to take photos for you and is rather tricky to balance your camera on a surface to take a shot of you all in. If this sounds all too familiar, you might be interested in the Gorillapod. This device is a camera tripod, which very handily can be attached to anything thanks to its bendable legs, which can be rotated through 360˚. The Gorillapod can therefore be wrapped around anything that is to hand around you, whether that is the branch on a tree, a railing or a lamp post.
3)AirPort Express

Have you ever stayed in a hotel, casually browsed the internet and then been faced with an unpleasant bill at the end of your stay? If you regularly need to use the internet during hotel stays, the AirPort Express is a very handy device. Despite its small size and simple appearance, Apple’s AirPort Express is a must for your computer bag. The AirPort Express acts a wireless base station, so after an easy connection between the Ethernet cable, the AirPort Express and modem, you have your own Wi-Fi domain. You can then happily use the internet without worrying about any unwanted charges.
4) Portable solar charger

While you like to go on holiday to get away from it all, who knows when you might need to make an important phone call using your mobile phone? Also if you are taking a digital camera, an MP3 player or a Kindle away with you, you will probably need to charge them at some point on your travels. If you’re on a long enough trip you might even decide to take some repair tools. If you are staying somewhere off the beaten track where you are uncertain whether there will be a power supply, a portable solar charger is a must. All that you need is some sunshine and hey presto, electronic devices can be charged up. A lot of the portable solar chargers on the market will fit the most common makes of mobile phone, though if it is not compatible with your phone additional adaptors can be purchased. USB connections allow any of the devices you are likely to take on holiday to be charged. If you are worried that you are camping or back packing and the device is likely to get wet, there’s no need to fear, as many are water resistant.
5) Electronic Cigarettes

For those of you who haven't given up smoking yet and dread all the coaches and museum tours without a break, electronic cigarettes can be invaluable. Some airlines even allow them to be used on flights (although these are certainly in the minority still) and you will find many buildings and buses will allow them where cigarettes are now banned. With many using these as an opportunity to quit smoking, why not take up the challenge when you're at your most relaxed and on holiday?
6) Steripen

If you are travelling to a destination where the safety of the water is questionable, this pocket-sized device is essential for your luggage to help keep you well during your stay. Stick the Steripen into a glass or bottle of water and in under a minute it uses UV light to destroy bacteria, viruses and protozoa, all of which could otherwise cause illness and ruin your holiday.
