Course Summary

WordPress theme development involves using HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript to build dynamic WordPress sites. In this course we start with a basic HTML/CSS/JS prototype and walk through all of the steps for converting it into a full WordPress theme. The portfolio theme we build in the course covers responsive navigation, page and blog templates, custom post types and even widget areas. Upon completion of the course students should be able to build their own custom WordPress themes from scratch.

    Starting a WordPress Theme

    In this stage we go over how to setup the basic files you will need to create a WordPress theme. We talk about the template hierarchy as well as how to add meta data to and activate a new custom theme. 6 steps

    • Extra Credit As you work through this course, think about a real world site that you may be able to code out as your own custom WordPress theme. You can either start with a new static template, an existing site designs that you want to duplicate or redesign, or even create a new theme completely from scratch.

    Working with CSS and JS in WordPress Themes

    In this stage we go over how to properly link to and setup CSS and JavaScript files for a WordPress theme. 4 steps In this stage we go over the basics of how to setup header and footer files, what WordPress code you need to include in your templates, and how to port over static template content into the WordPress templates. 3 steps

    The WordPress Loop

    In this stage we go over the WordPress Loop, the primary block of code that controls displaying content on most WordPress pages. 4 steps

    Building Page Templates in WordPress

    In this stage we go over working with the common templates used for displaying pages in WordPress. By the end of this stage you should have the basic static page templates setup for our site. 3 steps

    Building Out WordPress Navigation

    In this stage we go over how to work with the wp_nav_menu function for adding custom menu functionality to your themes. 3 steps

    Custom Post Type Templates in WordPress

    In this stage we go over an approach for coding templates for custom post types. This is an important step for working with WordPress sites that need to use custom post types. 5 steps

    Adding a Blog to a WordPress Theme

    In this stage we go over the templates needed in order to add a blog section to your site along with a flexible blog archive page. By the end of this stage we will have a fully functioning, working blog on our sites. 6 steps

    Custom Homepage Templates in WordPress

    In this template we go over the front-page.php and home.php templates for creating custom homepages in WordPress. 3 steps

    Finishing Your WordPress Theme

    In this video we talk about adding widget areas, using shortcodes and testing your WordPress theme. By the end of the stage you should be all set to launch your new theme and continue your WordPress learning. 5 steps
