Hi,

Im Richa, I have 2 years experience in IT, and my first project is Java production support L1, in which i have slowly moved to l2/l3. Now my company is giving me again another l1 project but as a lead role with 4 people under me and additionally the current project.

Everyone says me to move to developer role as in intial phase to career i wont learn much in support. I dont know which way to move as of now, to take training as developer and switch jobs or enhance my production support role and stick to it.

    Richa,

My two cents: never mind what every one tells you. You should make your decision according to what interests you and what your career goals are, if any. Development and support are two different streams of work in software. Each requires different skills and different perspectives on the work. Both streams are required in the market, ie, software development and software support. In my opinion, it's very incorrect that a person can't learn much in support. Support just gives you a different set of skills to learn in terms of technical skills, support systems and process skills, and workforce management skills. Creativity is required in both, it's just applied in different ways. Some people love the world of support and the sense of accomplishment it can give you when a difficult situation is successfully handled. Others love developing new software and seeing an idea converted into reality. Try thinking about what gives you greater satisfaction, choose a path, frame your goals and then get on the path of working towards them.
