Android - From Alchemical literature to an Operating System

As we all know Android as the most used Mobile Operating System across the world, little do we know about the origin of the work and its usage in other fields.

Android (then Androides) originated from the "Alchemical literature" in 1727 for want of a word to represent little humans by Albertus Magnus and Paracelsus.

J.S.Brown from Washington invented a Toy Automation or Doll Androides for which he was granted patent in 1863.

Later it resurfaced in the work of a French Author Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam in Tomorrow's Eve in the year 1886. The usage of the term was more relevant to the current context of Android (a robot)

In 1900's the word made and impact in Science fictions like The Cometeers (1936) and Captain Future (1940-1944).

Till 2003, the usage of Android was limited to naming robots.

In 2003, Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White started a firm Android Inc. to develop an advanced operating system for digital cameras.

They realized it that the market for the devices was not large enough, and diverted their efforts to producing a smartphone operating system to rival those of Symbian and Windows Mobile.

Google acquired Android Inc. in Aug 2005 and unveiled it as the first with the goal to develop open standards for mobile devices.

HTC Dream was the The first commercially available smartphone launched on Android OS in the year 2008.

From Oct 2008 to Sep 2013, there are 1 billion activated android devices across the globe.
