Meta Tags for SEO Optimization [Infographic]

“The Meta tags are the best way for site owners or webmasters to provide the information about their sites to search engines. ”
The Meta tags are added to the <head> section of your HTML page.
The Meta tags are the import part of Search Engine Optimization. It helps webmasters to provide information about web page to the search engines.
For increasing the traffic and sales of the websites, search engine optimization is the important factor.
The SEO is mostly divided in two parts.
  1. On Page Optimization
  2. Off Page Optimization
The Meta tags are the part of On Page Optimization.
The following are the important meta tags for SEO:
1. Title

This is the text you will see at the top of the browser. Search Engines Considers it as a title of your page.

When Search Engines display your site on SERP, it displays the title of your page which is written in the title tag.

Note: Try to keep your title between 55 to 60 characters.
2. Description

The brief description of your page. Search Engine display this description in snippet of SERP.


<meta name=description content=The brief details about your page. />

Note: Try to keep your description between 156 to 160 characters
3. Keywords

Meta Keywords is an outdated meta tag. Google and Bing are not considering meta keywords as a ranking factor. Yeah. Yahoo might be still considering it.

If you are using Keyword tag, use it in a natural way and not to add more than 10 keyword phrases.


<meta name=keywords content=keyword1, keyword2, keyword3 />

Note: Still you want to use it? Then don’t do keyword stuffing to avoid risk of Google Penalty.

4. Robots

The robots tags are the indication to search engines to what they should do with the page.


<meta name=robots content=index/noindex, follow/nofollow />

Index/noindex: This tells search engine whether to show the page in SERP or not. (Index =Search Engines can show the Page, Noindex= Search Engines can’t show the page in SERP)

Follow/nofollow: This tells search engines what to do with the links given on that page. (Follow: Search Engines can follow the links given on that page. Nofollow: Search Engine can’t follow the links)
5. Meta Content Type

This tag is used to indicate character set for the page. It should be present on every page. If you leave this tag, it could impact how your page renders in the browser.

Syntax & Example:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">

Your designer knows which the best option for your site is.
6. No Sitelinks Searchbox

If you don’t want to show Sitelinks Search Box when your site appears in search results, you can use this meta tag.


<meta name="google" content="nositelinkssearchbox" />
Final Thought:
The Meta tags do not only useful for SEO purpose. It helps a lot to attract the users. If you write great title and amazing description, visitors loves to click on your link. So, think also from user perspective to get great traffic and conversion.
