Department: The Communications Department is responsible for developing a coherent voice and delivering clear public messages to inform both US and international audiences of MSF, its field activities and the humanitarian principles that underpin them; to raise awareness about the plight of the populations we serve; to promote public communication aimed at exposing and describing the field reality, including dilemmas and challenges; and to garner public understanding for our advocacy messages related to field operational concerns and the Access Campaign, via the media, print and digital channels , public awareness and advocacy campaigns, conferences, etc.

Project: Under the direction of the Editorial Director, the Multimedia Graphic Designer will produce visual content and develop creative strategies to draw wider attention to the work of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSFUSA). The designer will bring fresh ideas to enhance our storytelling, engage audiences, and inform the public about our medical humanitarian action around the world. The designer will produce graphics primarily for digital media and video, including infographics, interactive graphics, and motion graphics. The designer will help shape MSF-USA’s visual identity across platforms, ensuring adherence to brand guidelines. Strengthening our visual communications is intended to expand MSF-USA’s reach and awareness, increase social sharing and website traffic, and inspire greater financial support and other involvement.

Tasks II. Essential Functions and Responsibilities

GRAPHIC CONTENT DEVELOPMENT FOR COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING (80%) Produces powerful graphics—including infographics, interactive graphics and motion graphics—to effectively convey MSF’s reporting and witnessing from field projects around the world. Distills complex concepts, medical data, and other information into clear, compelling, and accurate graphics. Provides graphic design support to the Communications and Development departments, and to MSF-USA as a whole, with a focus on video and digital media content. Priorities include rapid response to breaking news and emergencies involving MSF as well as longer-term projects to highlight medical humanitarian issues. Proposes ways in which graphics could be used to enhance MSF-USA’s storytelling capabilities and increase the impact of our communications and fundraising materials. Works with the Editorial team (Communications) to produce graphics for videos, social media posts, the MSF-USA website, and other digital platforms. Contributes graphics and design expertise to print publications and collateral as needed. Works with the Marketing team (Development) to design and supervise the production of graphics to drive fundraising goals, including paid social advertising, digital banner ads (still, animated, and interactive), lightboxes, and other interactive website elements. Coordinates with other teams and departments—including Events, Medical Publications, Field Human Resources, and the MSF Association—to assist them in their work and act as a liaison with design consultants and other vendors when required. Works to establish a unified visual style for MSF-USA content across platforms, and to develop distinctive graphics for campaigns and special projects. Serves as MSF-USA visual branding expert, maintaining digital and print brand guidelines. Designs elements and graphics for use by MSF’s global movement, ensuring they can be made locally appropriate and are available through the shared media database. Participates in strategy meetings about content production and dissemination. Identifies ways to augment presentation of MSF-USA’s work on digital platforms to increase engagement. Monitors field activities to appropriately represent MSF in communications materials, via reading MSF reports and updates, regular attendance of office presentations, program briefings, etc. Keeps up with emerging technologies and trends in digital media and the design industry. Attends trainings and workshops when relevant to performance and understanding of role, to augment skills and capabilities, and to understand how others are using graphics in their work.

ADMINISTRATION/STRATEGY (20%) Communicates on campaigns and schedules with Communications, Development, and other relevant departments. Attends regularly scheduled team and departmental meetings in Communications and Development to share information, brainstorm solutions, and coordinate priorities. Selects and manages Design Intern. Other tasks, as assigned.

III. Supervisory Responsibilities: Manages one or more staff consisting of interns, freelancers, volunteers, and/or work-study students. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Fiscal Responsibility Reviews, codes and submits invoices for approval by Editorial Director and processing by Finance.

IV. Extent of Public Contact Represents complex MSF-USA communications needs to vendors involved in production of materials.

V. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within the context of a moderately noisy office with many interruptions. Must be able to proofread own work accurately so that only minor corrections are needed on an infrequent basis. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. VI. Working Conditions, Travel and Environment The duties of the job require regular attendance 5 days/week for a minimum of 35 hours. Must be available to work before 9:00 am, after 5:00 pm or on weekends, as required. Must be able to travel, as required, for standard domestic and international business travel.

Qualifications Required • Minimum 3 years of directly relevant experience, preferably with a non-profit and/or media organization. • Degree or equivalent experience in visual communications design, information design, graphic design, digital/media arts, film/video, photography or related field. • Project management experience, including keen attention to detail, the ability to track multiple projects at one time, and to prioritize ongoing vs. immediate needs appropriately. • Demonstrated ability to produce compelling multimedia designs and motion graphics. Expert eye and hand for design, including information design and data visualization, with keen understanding of the interplay between design and social media. • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and InDesign. Experience in Premiere Pro and/or Final Cut Pro. • Advanced information graphics skills, including ability to manipulate and chart data in Excel, Powerpoint, and Illustrator. • Strong written and oral communications skills, ability to research, write, and fact-check graphics • Ability to synthesize complex source material in order to propose clear and effective communications and marketing content. • Genuine interest in and commitment to the humanitarian principles of MSF. • Demonstrated ability to think through problems systematically, integrate information from multiple sources, propose and implement graphics-based solutions, and monitor their effectiveness for all parties. • Highly organized. • Ability to handle a large volume of work and deal with pressure and deadlines. • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.

Preferred • Non-profit and/or fundraising experience. • Portfolio of similar non-profit, media, or client work, graphics and animation. • Experience designing custom map graphics using GIS (graphic information systems) datasets. • Video editing experience. • Writing and/or editing experience.
