SUMMARY

The Polio and Picornavirus Laboratory Branch (PPLB), Division of Viral Diseases, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, CDC, provides laboratory assistance, technical expertise and support for surveillance and related activities to monitor impact of vaccination and other prevention programs, and determine patterns of infection and disease. The Web Developer conducts web development activities in support of several projects being undertaken in PPLB in support of Global Polio Eradication.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following:

Work collaboratively within the development team to improve current pipelineBack End: Implement and test new algorithms for sequence comparison, high performance computing, system and back-end web-service coding/configurations, database access using analysis pipeline, benchmarking performance, troubleshooting, and preparing documentationFront End:Combine the art of design with the science of programming. Be responsible for the translation of UI/UX design wireframes to actual code. Contribute web-programming skills to further improve PASS interfaces and user experiencesBuild software tools, including development and implementation of new computational algorithmsManage/troubleshoot existing web-service hosted on multiple virtual machines

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

No supervisory or management authority.

EDUCATON AND EXPERIENCE

Back End: Bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or similar degree and 3 years of experience with Web tool development technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, Esri JavaScript API.

Front End: Bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or similar degree and 3 years of direct task related experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Back End

The candidate must have at a minimum:

Skilled in software development best practices, including performance, accessibility, responsive web design, progressive enhancement, and Test-Driven Development.Ability to write reusable, testable, efficient and scalable code.Understanding of user authentication and authorization between multiple systems, servers, and environments.Excellent critical thinking and communications skills both oral and written.Focus and independent drive to complete tasks.Strong analytical and organizational skills.Excellent customer service skills.Function well in a fast-paced environment.CDC experience a plus.

Front End:

The candidate must have at a minimum:

Knowledge of 508 guidelines.Responsible for creating and updating web pages in a customized WordPress WCMS utilizing the CDC templates based on designer mock-ups, using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.Proficiency in one or more programming languages: HTML, CCS, JavaScript or related language.Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, and Acrobat).Excellent customer service skills.Function well in a fast-paced environment.Excellent critical thinking and communications skills both oral and written.Focus and independent drive to complete tasks.Strong analytical and organizational skills.CDC experience a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work will be performed in a climate-controlled office environment.
