The smallest unit of data in a computer. A bit has a single binary value, either 0 or 1. Generally. computers are designed to store data and execute instructions in bit multiples called bytes. 

In telecommunication transmission, the Bit Error Rate (BER) is the percentage of bits that have errors relative to the total number of bits received in a transmission, usually expressed as ten to a negative power. 

Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer payment system and digital currency introduced as open source software in 2009.  It is a cryptocurrency, so-called because it uses cryptography to control the creation and transfer of money. Mining is the process of adding transaction records to Bitcoin's public ledger of past transactions. This ledger of past transactions is called the block chain as it is a chain of blocks. The block chain serves to confirm transactions to the rest of the network as having taken place. Bitcoin nodes use the block chain to distinguish legitimate Bitcoin transactions from attempts to re-spend coins that have already been spent elsewhere. Bitcoin mining is so called because it resembles the mining of other commodities: it requires exertion and it slowly makes new currency available at a rate that resembles the rate at which commodities like gold are mined from the ground.
