Play by Play: User Interface Design with Kyle Neath

Kyle Neath was the first designer hired at GitHub. He has had a hand in most of the projects shipped during that time (the website, GitHub Issues, GitHub for Mac, and others). Kyle is a master of his tools and takes a practical approach to design. Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics, he considers the context of the existing site and thinks through how his designs fit into the average user's workflow. In this course, he designs a prototype for a theoretical feature at PeepCode: a bulk video download system. Kyle will walk through: thinking through a UI problem, using aesthetic and workflow context when designing a new feature, using small tools together for collaborating on designs (Skitch, Campfire, Preview, Photoshop), designing just enough detail for the first iteration of a feature, educating users about new features, finding the sweet spot between functionality and simplicity. Kyle spends most of his time in Photoshop and the Webkit web inspector. Both designers and developers will benefit from watching how he works.
