Choosing a Website Content Management System - Image 1
In choosing a website content management system, you should define what type of projects you should be managing and their scope. You have to describe what your needs are. Checklists are only secondary. What you actually need is what is important. To select the way you manage your content, you must be able to first have a definite description of your scope, budget and the kinds of projects you work with. In fact, this is not true only when developing a content management system, it is also the same in any aspect of doing business.

Doing business requires a firm to have its own website nowadays. Moreover, it is not only a plain website where prospective and return customers read information. With the advancement of technology and stiff competition, company sites should now be interactive where transactions between the clients and the business firm are done. Webmasters are no longer the sole developers of business websites. The work of developing this newest means of transacting reach other departments of the organisation including marketing, production and others. With the intricacy, businesses also has very specialised content management needs and with the different requirements, there are also myriad choices of website content management systems.

To determine what kind of website content management system you need, you should focus more on describing what you really need. Lean more towards being subjective rather than objective with what you have. Rather than comparing the situation in which your company is in, start from the inside and be subjective with what is exactly happening in your firm. You can be inclined towards being objective if or when you want to determine what you want to aim or achieve with your system.

When identifying the website content management system needs of your company, it is best that you aim to know your needs first before choosing among what system criteria are available. There is no shortcut. You cannot go out there right away and explore your options. You cannot simply approach a system provider and ask them what they will recommend to you. Yes, you can do so and if you have asked the good vendor, they will answer with a question asking you to describe your needs.

So, before you go out and explore your options, take a look at what you are doing and what your needs are first. There are aspects of website content management system which you are already doing well and there are those which you are inadequate or do not have at all. By knowing these three, you will be able to better determine what really your needs are. Examples of system aspects include the content itself, archiving, meta data, automation and design, among others. Do analysis of these first and you will be able to same time and money.

Having studied what you are currently doing, you can now describe what your system lacks. Outline what more do you need to have or do and identify the technology you will need to be able to achieve and perform them. You have the advantage of approaching more than one system service provider. Do not squander this edge by being pressured or dazzled. Focus on your needs and take your time so that you will be able to make the best decision. Conduct a repetitive test on the systems they propose and get to know the vendor and its people.
