Understanding SharePoint 2013: Part 3 - Development Overview -
A detailed look at the SharePoint 2013 development model.
Client-Side Object Model
The SharePoint Client-Side Object Model (CSOM) enables a client application to make batch requests to a front-end Web server running SharePoint Products and Technologies to perform operations on core platform objects such as lists, sites, and users. With CSOM a client application has access to much of the same functionality that is exposed by the SOAP Web services. CSOM can also be accessed using common web technologies via a REST methodology.
